Procedures and Policies » Absences/Tardies

Students are required to attend regularly and punctually the school in which they are enrolled.

School policy 9.123 states that any absence or tardy regardless of the length of time, is considered an attendance event.

Parent notes may be used to excuse four (4) attendance events each semester (fall semester - Aug. to Dec. and spring semester - Jan. to May). These four (4) parent notes per semester allow eight (8) excused events during the school year by parent notes. Any other absence or tardy requires a written statement of verification from a doctor, public health official, dentist, medical practitioner, court official, etc., to be submitted to principal or designee in order for the absence to be approved as excused. All school excuses are to be turned in to the principal or principal designee within three (3) days of the absence in order for the absence to be excused. Any absences before or after a holiday or any school break are unexcused unless a doctor’s note is presented or school officials request an exemption due to an illness that occurs during the school day.

Kentucky School Law 159.150 defines truant as “any student who has been absent from school without a valid excuse for three (3) days or tardy three (3) days.” Habitual truant is any student who has been reported as truant two (2) or more times. Henderson County students who are habitual truants with six (6) or more unexcused absences are subject to an Educational Neglect Petition being filed on the parent or guardian or a Truancy Petition being filed through the Court Designated Workers (CDW) office.

Students may be granted an Educational Enhancement absence for up to ten (10) days to pursue an educational opportunity determined by the principal to be of significant educational value. This opportunity may include, but not be limited to, participation in an educational foreign exchange program, intensive instructional, experiential, or performance program in one (1) of the core curriculum subjects of English, science, mathematics, social students, foreign language, and the arts. The intent for this request is for a “significant” individual educational experience. Unless the principal determines that extenuating circumstances exist, requests for date(s) falling within state or district testing periods shall not be granted.

Please schedule all trips and vacations during the designated school calendar breaks since most trips will not be considered an Educational Enhancement Absence.

When a student is tardy, parent/guardian must come into the office with student to sign him/her in. Students cannot be dropped off to enter the school by themselves.
